Lokos Only! The 3rd Manila Surfers' Cup

1. THE SURF VIDEO CONTEST
Get those cameras rolling sexy surf children! MSA is hosting the very first surf video contest as part of the kick-off for Lokos Only, 3rd Manila Surfers' Cup.

Details are as follows -
1. Maximum time: 8 minutes
2. Must be original footage
3. Must be about local (Philippine) surfing and surfers
4. Must be submitted in DVD format
5. No more than three submissions per person

Submit your dvds to FivefortySurf Co's shop (Katipunan Extension, in front of Kopiroti and Countryside). Address the dvds to JP Sarmiento "Surf Video Contest" and we'll see your videos aired during the kick off party!

Deadline for all submissions is Feb 17, 2008.
Voting will be during the kick off party, scheduled for Feb 19. 2008.

2. THE COMP Worship the sun! Howl at the moon! Surf all weekend! We're all a little loko inside. Let the lunacy out at the 3rd Manila Surfers' Cup in San Juan, La Union.

Events will include Longboard and Shortboard divisions, a costume expression session, beach games, a party under the full moon and more.

Wahine Longboard:
- Surfing one year and under
- Surfing more than one year

Men's Longboard:
- Surfing one year and under
- Surfing more than one year
*for Men's longboard, there is a size requirement on your boards. They must be at least 9'0 in length.

Wahine Shortboard: one division
Men's Shortboard: one division
* for shortboard division there is a size limit of 6'8. Board will be subject to the scrutiny of the judges.

Loko Loko Costume Surf Comp: open to all board sizes, will be co-ed.
* If you plan to join this special side activity, please contact KAGE immediately as there are only a limited number of slots available for this division.

The competition proper is only open to MSA members. MSA is always open for new members to come and join the fun. If you aren't a member and would like to be, please send an email to msaregistration@yahoo.com.ph

SURFERS ETIQUETTE

The Manila Surfers Association does not want you to just have fun out there in the line-up. We want to make sure that you are having the best possible time in a responsible manner. Please check out these tips from writer Rebecca Heller of http://www.wahinesurfing.com/learn/etiquette.asp. Maximize your stoke by knowing the general rules and guidelines of surfing.

Check out the following often unspoken rules and etiquette surfers, especially beginners, can keep our squeaky clean image in and out of the water.

Don't drop in. The person furthest out from shore and closest to where the wave is breaking has the right of way. If you are further out on the shoulder and the person on the inside is catching the wave, pull back. As a beginner, pretty much consider anyone up on a wave having priority over you.

Queue up. At point or reef breaks where there is a centralized take-off area there is an unofficial line. Kind of like Disneyland, wait for those who were there before you to go, then it is your turn. Once you have taken a wave, or even attempted a ride, give those closer to the peak a chance. Let a couple waves go by before you try again. Hopefully, they will do the same for you.

Paddle straight out at a beach break, avoiding the peak of the wave and the take off zones. This is easier said then done, since the take-off spot at a beach can shift around. This also means you may have to paddle out through the white water rather than the unbroken sections. If a surfer is coming down the line as you are paddling out try to gauge your speed and paddle behind them. At a point or reef, try to paddle around the break.

Location. Location. Location. Stick to spots that support your ability level (i.e. beginners, don't paddle out at Pipe). Surfing at spots that are too difficult put you in danger as well as those around you. That being said, more advanced surfers shouldn't get pissy with those trying to learn at well-known beginner breaks.

Don't ditch your board. When you are turtling or duck diving hold tightly onto your board. Don't just let it go haphazardly with the wave as you will knock out surfers behind you. Remember you have a ring of destruction around you equal to the length of your leash! If you can't hold on – let's be honest sometimes the wave will rip the board out of your hands – try and yell "Board!"

Beginners are invisible. When more advanced surfers see beginners flailing around looking like they don't have it all under control yet, they will ignore you. Thankfully they will avoid you, but they will also ignore you. Meaning, they will take off when you are going for a wave assuming that you are unable to catch it. Don't get upset, you probably weren't going to catch it anyway. Hopefully, when they see you catch one they will pull back and give a cheerful hoot!

Respect your elders. They have probably been surfing the break you are at since before you were born. Give 'em some space and their fair share of waves; hopefully they will do the same for you. Don't be afraid to ask advice, more surfers than not will be flattered and eager to tell you what they know. Plus, they have a lot to teach you; if they give you some advice (kind or unkind) take it.

Support others. Help others, give encouragement, and don't drop in on them. Beginers are the minority out there so give a little love to the others out there. Give 'em a smile when they paddle out a hoot when they catch a good wave. Compliment them. There is no greater buzz than someone telling you, "Nice ride."

Share waves. Once you get good enough to catch most of the waves your try for, share, especially if you are on a longboard as you will be further out than the shortboarders and able to catch more waves. Let others have their turn, especially those who aren't as good as you. Even if you were snaked all the time when you started, don't return the favor. Surfing shouldn't be a hazing process.

Localism sucks. But unfortunately, it does exist. Know something about the surf spot where you are going out. It is best to go with someone who has surfed there before. Bad behavior should not be condoned, but should be avoided, especially by the beginning surfer.

Surf with Aloha. If you are a beginner, or even a veteran surfer, have the right attitude. It's all about having fun, communing with nature and goofing around. Leave any grudges or bad attitudes at home and surf with aloha, peace and love.

Pick up after yourself. And finally, the best etiquette is always to leave the beach as you found it. Don't litter whether you are on the beach or on the street. Join an ocean conservation philanthropy like Surfrider Foundation. We only have one ocean so treat it with respect.

MSA Elections: Urgent for all Members

MSA is up for elections for its officers. The Board of Directors feels that it would be good to bring in new blood, new ideas and new energy to the organization. Also, this gives all the members a chance to truly be involved in the future activities of the organization.

If you know any friends that do not go online much but would like to be involved in this, please forward this to them.

The following positions are open for nomination (process of nomination in next blog):

The President is responsible for overseeing all of the operations of MSA and assuring that the organization conducts its programs according to the Published MVO and in coordination with the board of directors. The president is expected yearly and within one month of the beginning of the term to facilitate an official working meeting to determine the yearly calendar, projected budget, the yearly MVO (if any changes are to be made), and finalize all appointments of the board of officers.

Secretary is responsible for maintaining all of the administrative materials of MSA including minutes from every meeting, official SEC and BIR paperwork, other official paperwork, hard copies of every member application, templates of all solicitation letters and other important documents. The secretary is expected yearly and within one month of the beginning of the term to establish/audit an official hard and soft filing system.

The Treasurer is responsible for maintaining all official financial documentation of MSA. They will be expected to file all appropriate paperwork with the BIR and other institutions yearly. The treasurer is expected yearly and within one month of the beginning of the term to audit and produce an accurate overview and all appropriate financial statements as well as a projected yearly budget in coordination with the president to be approved by the Board of Directors. Scope of work also includes keeping accurate records of finances for all projects and maintaining the corporate bank account and checkbook.

Marketing is responsible for soliciting funds for association activities from sponsors. The scope of work also covers maintaining a good working relationship with all previous and potential sponsors (ex. feedback, etc.). The marketing team is on call during the days of the events as well to ensure that the sponsors' needs are met and to protect the rights of the organization.
Appointments: three associates

PR is in charge of all public relations pertaining to the activities of the organization. They are involved in contacting the tri-media (broadcast, print and web) for coverage on events (both pre and post). Writing of press releases and announcements falls under PR scope. The team also ensures that the organization continues to be seen in the public eye. They coordinate with Marketing during major events and with Archives for collation of material.
Appointments: three PR associates to handle each arm of media (broadcast, print and web)

The Archives/ Historian is responsible for keeping documentation of All MSA activities. The archives position is expected yearly and within one month of the beginning of the term to audit and oversee the updating of the Official MSA online infrastructure as well as hard and soft materials in the official Archives in coordination with the secretary.
Appointments: two associates, one for internet, one for non internet hard materials.

Membership. The membership head is in charge of updating and taking care of the membership database. Other tasks include: making sure members are aware of the projects of MSA, ensuring that the members feel a sense of belonging to the organization, coordinating with PR and Marketing during events for membership manpower, and creating minor activities for members to be involved in.
Appointments: three positions for internal, external and miscellaneous.

Important note: the appointed positions are not elected. These are chosen by the elected officer in charge from the existing member database.

NOMINATIONS AND VOTING

Nominations will begin officially two weeks before elections are to take place and will be open for the whole of the two weeks. Any member is allowed to nominate other current members for any position over email or in person. Nominations will be closed at the beginning of the elections.

Only pre-existing MSA members are allowed to nominate/vote/be nominated.

Elections will officially begin with the closing of nominations. Nominees will be asked to accept of decline before each position is open for voting. Voting shall take place by writing the names on a piece of paper which will be counted by two members of the elections committee. Voting can take place by show of hands if agreed on by a majority of the present voters. Positions will be elected by a majority percentage of the total votes. Abstaining is considered a vote and should the number of abstains be greater in percentage than any candidate’s percentage, the vote must be taken again at the end of the voting for all other positions.

Process: All candidates except those for the President position will have a one minute speech to be followed by a two minute question period for the membership. Time will be kept by an officially appointed timekeeper. The President position will have 2 minute speech with a 5 minute question period. Elected candidates will take over the positions one week after the closing of elections.

Its basically just one big beach party, not par-teh type of party..hehe. Bring a bunch of your friends, roll out a beach mat or a sarong while drinking cold beer on a hot sunny day. Or better yet come and join the beach games MSA and ZSA has set up.

MSA gives a big "Woot, Woot" to Aya Garcia, Nikki dela Paz, Vic Gamboa and Miko Sarmiento for their stellar performace at the 9th La Union International Longboard Open.

Aya made it to the semi-finals of the Wahine Open division while Vic made it to the semis of the Beginner division.

Nikki - Wahine champ for both longboard and shortboard divisions of the Dakine Manila Surfers Cup - won third runner up in the Wahine Open division.

And Miko Sarmiento took first place at the 9th La Union International Longboard Open. Three weeks ago, he surfed his way to a 2nd place finish in the Dakine Manila Surfers Cup.

Changes in the Surf Clinics

Due to circumstances and changes in logistics, MSA must close registration for the surf clinics. We will honor the bookings of those who have already registered and paid as of today, January 11, 2007.

Others who wish to be introduced to surfing may still avail of lessons through the La Union Surf Club and their accredited instructors at the regular rate.

Aloha!

The Manila Surfers' Association is holding its 2nd annual surf comp in San Juan, La Union this coming January 20-21, 2006. Named Dakine Manila Surfers' Cup it is sponsored by Dakine, Reef, SMB, Jagermeister, Southpoint, FCS, Clarins, Walden, Sticky Bumps and Anacapa.

Everyone is invited to watch and join in on the party.

For Manila Surfers who wish to compete, divisions will be as follows:

Men's Shortboard

*competitors can enter both divisions but must pay the registration fee twice*

Registration is now on-going. If you are interested in joining:

Keep The Breaks Clean

To all Manila Surfers:

It recently came to our attention that Pundaquit (home of our beloved Magic Left and Ate Nora's Resort) does not have a regular trash collection system. The mayor of San Antonio has to request for a truck to come to their barangay to pick up the garbage.

So, since we all surf there and enjoy the waves, we should also be picking up after ourselves. As much as possible let's not leave trash and litter when we are there. Let's not be dirty surfers. Pack what you normally would throw away into your own garbage bags and dispose of them in the larger trash bins in San Antonio on your way home.

Also, when in Siargao the following measures have been suggested:

-- Ocean 101 has a depot of rainwater at the back of the rooms, Sagana offers refills. Or if staying more than a few days, get one of the huge refillable containers at a refilling station in GL. It only costs about P50 for about 5 gallons when you get back your deposit for the container.

-- Make an effort to reduce the amount of trash that you generate while on the island. Bring home as much of it as you can (someone I know uses the plastic mineral water bottles to line his boardbag as a sort of recycled cushion) and try your best to minimize waste output.

Kick Off Party at Dish on August 16, 2006

The Manila Surfers Association kicks off "Reef@Zambapalooza" with a 3-in-1 event on August 16th, 8pm at Dish, ABS-CBN.

Yes, a 3-in-1 event! Parang kape pero mas okay!

Party with bands Flood, Southern Grass and Reefer. Catch a fashion show featuring Reef, Eillim and Brown Belly. Participate in an on-going relief drive for the locals of San Narciso Zambales.

Please bring your donations (food, clothes and medicines) to Dish.

Three sleeps later and its time to head to Pundakit in San Antonio Zambales for "Reef@Zambapalooza", scheduled for August 19-20, 2006. The two-day surf comp and music festival features bands Cosmic Love, Reefer and Brownman Revival with a special fire performace by Planet Zips.

Spread the word. Repost this on your multiply, friendster, myspace, and hi5 accounts. Blog about it. Text your friends. Whatever it takes to get the word out. The more people that we get to come and bring goods, the more help we'll be able to give to San Narciso.

Due to the changing weather conditions (what can you do, that's nature for you), MSA & ZSA have made a decision to move the competition proper from San Narciso to Pundakit, San Antonio.

Same dates: August 19 and 20, 2006
Same times: First competitors' briefing is at 7am on Saturday in front of Capones Resort
Same bands: Cosmic Love, Reefer and Brownman Revival
Same good vibes.

By land from Manila, exit or take the North Luzon Expressway (NLE), and exit at San Fernando. Go all the way to the Dinalupihan junction, and turn right at the Crossroads where Soldiers pose he Bataan Death March. Go straight and stay on the left side when you see the Shell Station splitting the road to two. Turn left into the SBMA Bataan gate. Taking this route will save you 30 minutes of travel time to the north of Zambales, and gives you a view of SBMA. Exit through the Subic gate, and turn left. Getting lost should never be a concern because Zambales has only one highway all the way up to the North, crossing all towns. If the feeling of being lost does indeed creep up, you may ask any town municipal usually found in the center plaza of all towns.There are about a handful of new GOVIC Highways newly built almost all towns of Zambales. You may take them if you are trying to cut across town proper as shortcuts.The Subic GOVIC is not yet fully complete. The castillejos GOVIC Highway is great. You turn right into this Highway at the side before the Jesus Magsaysay Highschool and exit past the town center. The San Antonio GOVIC Highway is complete already but still too dark at night. The GOVIC Highway in Iba helps you get faster into the beach area of Iba without having to chase Tricycles off the roads.

By bus, take the Victory Liner (http://www.victoryliner.com) to Iba. Air conditioned and non-air conditioned buses are available. These buses will pass all the towns leading to Iba, take the Iba bus, and change buses in the Olongapo Victory Liner Terminal, and take the bus that leads to Alominos, Pangasinan. This will stop in Sta. Cruz, and other Zambales destinations farther north than Iba. From a town to another, you may take jeepney rides. Fare rates are low.

We will continue to collect relief goods both at the kick off party at Dish on August 16 and on site at Pundakit during the weekend.
